Universal Health Care: How Stupid Have They Figured Out We Are? | The Politics of Debt

Posting this after speaking with not one but 2 people who ended up on my phone just needing to talk to someone to figure out how to get non-insurance medical care today. I had answers, sure, I know the system here in Austin, but they were depressing.

Every time someone talks about how awesome this state is for not having income tax or how few days the legislature meets … yeah, sweet, in a short-sighted way. But I remember instead how low we rank for healthcare and education.

In return for not paying taxes, the people of this state will inevitably pay for these things in avoidable illnesses and accidents, deaths from untreated chronic disease, and the ignorance of our children. I guess it depends on what cost you prefer.

It’s not the government’s job to do everything, but surely it’s one appropriate forum in which we can gather together and take care of each other in some really crucial ways.

Or maybe we are each an island.
