I was reading recently that there’s a disproportionately high number of high-functioning autistics (and those with Asperger’s) in the computer industry. The stereotype that computer nerds have social issues has some basis in the social discomfort that comes from this communications disorder/difference.
The truth is that computer work is a natural for many autistics. As the article states, autism brings with it certain traits that help out immensely in jobs involving programming, data crunching, testing and other similar work - intense concentration, unparalleled memory recall, precision and accuracy, numerical ability.
It’s nice to see people treat autism and Asperger’s not as disabilities, but as communication and processing differences.
