“ State science curriculum director Chris Comer says she was forced to resign today according to the Austin-American Statesman. She walked away from her nine-year career with the Texas Education Agency amid accusations of insubordination and misconduct, both of which appear to be connected with her apparent bias against the teaching of intelligent design as an alternative to the theory of evolution. ”
Warning: Angry Political Commentary. Don’t bother reading this if you agree with intelligent design or the teaching of it. Open minds welcome.
Epic Fucking Fail. Are our public officials really intending to enforce the inclusion of intelligent design in public school curriculum? Seriously? Does anyone really believe that creationism isn’t lurking behind intelligent design? Can someone tell me where the idea of separation of religious values and the state went? Inculcating children with religiously-based ideas in a public, state-funded school is at best unwise and at worst intolerant, racist and narrow-minded. There is indeed an appropriate forum for this type of values-based education - church - a forum that is based on personal choice which those of other faiths can avoid.
The idea of a single, overarching, conscious and intentional intelligence involved specifically in creation (not to mention maintenance or ongoing involvement) is a painfully obvious extension of uniquely Judeo-Christian beliefs once you know anything about other religions. It’s the creator/father-God, the one God, just cloaked for convenient political subterfuge and public obfuscation in ambiguities and evasions.
I’m shocked that it could get this far, and dismayed that our legislators and other public officials could countenance, nay even support! such flagrant public disrespect for people of other faiths and belief systems. This is not supposed to be a religious autocracy.
We are not required to be Christians here, or we’re not supposed to be. No one should be punished for their beliefs, nor should our children be forced to be subjected to the belief systems of others.
I don’t notice intelligent design proponents clamoring for the inclusion of ideas from other religions besides Christianity. Perhaps we should also teach the possibility of multiple intelligences, or the possibility of a nature-based fecundity theory, or some sort of chaotic accident theory based on natural disaster, or perhaps the idea of an mindless intelligence creating at random? Do you recognize those religions?
No, these ideas of creation are NOT included in this detestable, intolerant campaign, even though people of all of those faiths live and work here in America just like everyone else. And that’s because equality is not really what this is about, and it’s only the politically powerful Christian movement that’s interested in securing and increasing political, governmental approbation of their beliefs and worldview through the deliberate inculcation of our young.
