OK, so. Several things.
1. This calls into question the validity of TED talks. I mean, I already thought they were on the smarmy, suspicious side of pretentious assery, but this really clinches it.
2. Bob knows about as much about being Buddha as my dog knows about theoretical physics. Have I mentioned Bob is an ass? Did I mention I knew Bob?
3. There was a joke at Columbia when I was there (I was in the same department he teaches in) that went like this:
Q: What’s the difference between God and Bob Thurman?
A: God shows up sometimes.
It was well-known that Bob didn’t attend his own classes. Ever. Well, maybe once a semester. Each class period another grad student would lead discussion. Sometimes they wouldn’t bother at all. He just didn’t much seem to be interested. Unless there was publicity involved, Bob didn’t come.
Bob once attempted to insult a Christianity professor by making fun of Christianity. That professor was an atheist. Bob is the only senior religion professor I’ve ever run across that didn’t know that most responsible professors of religion separate personal belief from professional teaching, research and inquiry. It’s college, Bob, not church/temple/whatever.
Also, he was just an ass in general.

You could substitute “memory” for “history,” since history is just collective memory.
From the article (which has much of the book in it):
Among his many creative feats is a fairly unknown, fairly scandalous one: In 1939, when Geisel left Vanguard for Random House, he had one condition for his new publisher, Bennett Cerf — that he would let Geisel do an “adult” book first. The result was The Seven Lady Godivas: The True Facts Concerning History’s Barest Family, which tells the story of nudist sisters who, after their father’s death, pledge not to wed until each of them has “brought to the light of the world some new and worthy Horse Truth, of benefit to man.”
“ What is it with all of these young single white women, overeducated — doesn’t mean intelligent. ”
Here’s The Woman Rush Limbaugh Is Attacking Today; ‘Totally Bizarre,’ She Says - Forbes
Limbaugh is just bizarre. That’s an actual quote. To have your work attacked and/or dismissed on the basis of you being a young single white woman rather than on the merits of the work and research itself. To call a simple bachelor’s degree “overeducated.” This isn’t even real commentary or criticism. I don’t really care much about Limbaugh, I just feel sad for the people who believe him and listen to him, and for the rest of us who have to put up with the results of his bigoted ignorance.
Also in the category of baffling things: Mormon underwear. I didn’t know this was a thing. I will not try to pretend to understand this thing. It is apparently also something that most Mormons refuse to talk about. It sounds as if during confirmation (or something like it) you are instructed about your temple garments (aka underwear) and then you wear it as much as possible after that to remind yourself of your connection to the temple and to be modest.
This makes me wonder if there is a special sub-set of Mormon underground pornography involving religious underwear and its removal.
Maybe that’s just me.
I’ve been reliably informed that this is actually Santorum’s family, and that those are not actors, and this is not a meme.
But … why are they making those faces? And why are they dressed so hideously? Is this the Waltons? What’s going on? WHY IS SHE CRYING AND WEARING A PETER PAN COLLAR AND PLAID JUMPER WITH A MATCHING DOLL?
I don’t even think Chandler would have worn that sweater vest.

I have been reliably informed that there are conservatives blathering on about Limbaugh and First Amendment protections.
I really don’t think that’s the point, guys. It comes down to verbal diarrhea, not first amendment. CAN he say whatever he wants? Sure. I seriously doubt Clear Channel will yank him unless he’s convicted of hate speech and inciting violence, which are clear criminal violations.
The problem here is more about what is and is not constructive dialogue in political discourse, what’s appropriate in certain contexts, whether you’re going for a real point, or if you’re just blowing shit out of proportion to make a point. Limbaugh is trying to be outrageous and inflaming the stupid people who actually might believe using birth control makes you a slut.
Honestly, people. Get a brain.

This seems to about sum it up, yes. I’m waiting for a GOP person to talk responsibly about the economy, and it seems this is mostly what they have to say.
“ The greatest contribution of the American project is the recognition that together, we can rely on civil discourse to engage the tensions that characterize these difficult issues, and work towards resolutions that balance deeply held and different perspectives. ”
Message to the Georgetown Community on Civility and Public Discourse
It’s mostly when people forget this, or never realize its importance in the first place, that I start to really hate politics. Most politics is not civil discourse. It’s name-calling, finger-pointing, money-grubbing, sound bites, oversimplification and overly dramatic posturing, and half the time not about an actual issue.
