Miriam: “… it was more of an excuse than a dress…” (via Twitter / Miriam)
Lost in translation, indeed...
So I just watched Pan’s Labyrinth, which I thought was good, nicely Greek, and that bit of CGI where the wall opens is very spiffy indeed. All in all a very atmospheric movie. Of course, I thought that about the last version of Lolita that I saw also. Seems that there tends to be a kind of dreamlike atmosphere I notice. Aside from that bit of random comparison, I was a little …...
Nerds & Michelle Meyrink
Since I am watching Revenge of the Nerds today, I’d like to post a brief tribute to Michelle Meyrink. In fact, it was she who inspired me to watch Revenge of the Nerds, after watching her as Jordan in Real Genius the other day. My favorite movie, of course. Jordan is one of my heros. She likes nerds and she is a nerd. Sounds familiar.
DAY ONE
… of vacation, that is. Got up, saw off my mother-in-law and … grandmother -in-law? Cooked brunch. Sat down with a couple rounds of Desktop Tower Defense. Am about to watch Revenge of the Nerds and crochet a couple of stuffed bunny toys as presents. Then to call MMcE. After that, I might get crazy and watch another movie. Ah, I love vacation.
Read between the lines. There might be a ninja hiding there.

This is an actual pattern. I don’t understand why people make patterns like this. I mean, it’s underwear and it’s a potholder.

Paper Doily Sales on the decline in Britain - Oh...
I came across this article in the UK Daily Mail about the decline of paper doily sales in Britain. I just so happen to understand why this might be news across the pond, because I’ve read way more than my share of Brit Lit and British Novels. Still, because I’m not so much … um, prone to being British, it is a bit confusing as to why this is a big deal. I mean, come on folks,...
Farthing (Jo Walton) →
Intriguing concept. It’s a typical book, really - a murder mystery set in rural post-war Britain. But the author has done something that was for a long time something people didn’t even want to think about. In this post-war scenario, Britain bought peace by securing a truce with the Nazis. Hmmm…

Your anxiety is not someone else's fault
Here’s a story my mom told me. She teaches senior high school English, and over the years we’ve discovered that if you’re a teacher, you get blamed for all the children’s problems. This is a case in point.
I am not one to criticize anxiety, as I’m an overly anxious and neurotic person myself. But you have a responsibility to take care of your own mental health,...

OK, so i think this is funny, and i want to post a link to “the myspacewhore” character on myspace now. However, it does tell me that i’m old enough not to have a scene at all anymore, because the bands they’re linking with the scenesters are mostly unknown. not entirely unknown yet, but who the ** is “taking back sunday” and why would you choose such a lame...

– Lewis Carroll. My conversation with J got me thinking about authoring and reading material, and the difference in interpretation that leads to alternate meanings. Can you say something and expect it to have just one meaning? No. You can’t even expect it to have your meaning any longer.
Possible insight into my marriage...
This is, in fact, what passed for conversation with my husband on the way to work this morning. To give you a reference point, I had said that there’s no such thing as an absolute. J thought there might be some sort of cliche about it being ironic or impossible that you could make an absolute statement about there not being any absolute statements. Jeff via email:...

My favorite teashops
All of these teashops have their own problems, but nevertheless have their own true characters. Plus, these are not coffeeshops that serve tea. I love coffee, too, but a tearoom/teashop is supposed to love tea, and have 80 varieties on hand and know at which temperature to brew them all. These I like, because I have been to them all.

The Itch...
I have a particular kind of itch. Every time I think that I’m finally over it or just plain to old for it, it creeps up again… See, the problem is that I have a hard time staying still. It’s like being restless, but in a major take-your-stuff-with-you kind of way. It maks my family groan and employers moan, but there you have it. Maybe a defect in my design?
Yesterday I...
